Conferences and Events:

The Neumann University Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development offers a range of events to serve both our campus and external communities.

Conferences and Seminars
The ISSCD collaborates with Seattle University and the University of Notre Dame to host an annual conference on sport and spirituality for member institutions of the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA). It periodically hosts local seminars and lectures on pertinent topics related to ethics and morality in athletics.

The Neumann University Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development Award
With the inaugural Neumann University Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development Award, the Institute begins a tradition of recognizing outstanding individuals in athletics. Recipients are examples of the development of strong character through athletics, a demonstration of spirituality, and an embodiment of the good that exists in sport. The initial award presentation, scheduled for October 12, 2011, will be the first event of a lecture series hosted by the Institute during the 2011-12 academic year.

Athlete Commissioning
At the start of every sport season, Neumann “commissions” each student athlete at a Sunday evening liturgy. “Commissioning” is a process in which each student athlete is blessed, pledges to compete passionately as a representative of Neumann University and commits to act with respect, integrity and perseverance in all athletic and academic pursuits.

Team Evenings of Reflection
The ISSCD holds an Evening of Reflection for each team along with its team chaplain and coaches every season to pause, pray and come together outside of the athletic arena. Using a different theme each year, the Evenings provide an opportunity for athletes and coaches to unplug from the busyness of their lives, gain a new perspective on life and reenergize.
